About Us

Log Cabin Republicans was founded in 1977 to oppose Proposition 6, the Briggs Initiative, which sought to ban gay and lesbian teachers from California public schools. Gay conservatives organized to defeat the measure, mobilizing common-sense Republicans statewide and persuading former Governor Ronald Reagan to urge a no vote. The initiative was defeated by a two-to-one margin.

Since then, Log Cabin Republicans has grown into a national organization representing LGBT conservatives who support limited government, strong national defense, and individual liberty. In 2019, Log Cabin Republicans of California became a permanently chartered organization of the California Republican Party. In 2024, we helped remove all anti-gay language from the Republican National Committee platform.

Our mission is to elect Republicans across California by building a coalition of gay and straight conservatives committed to practical solutions and results driven policy-expanding housing through deregulation, responsible forest management, lower taxes and energy costs, parental rights in education, and protecting women's sports and spaces.
